3. Hazards Identification

Emergency Overview: Organisms used are non-pathogenic, but can cause infection when in contact with open wounds. These organisms are susceptible to many commonly used antibiotics.

Potential Health Effects:

  • Signs and Symptoms of Acute Overexposure: Eye, skin irritation
  • Signs and Symptoms of Chronic overexposure: Dermatitis and skin sensitization
  • Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Allergies, dermatitis.
  • Ingestion: Ingestion (acute exposure) of ammonium slats may produce nausea, vomiting, gastric irritation. Large doses (over 6 grams) may cause systemic ammonia toxicity. Symptoms may include heavy breathing, blue skin, dulness, restlessness, convulsions or coma. DSP ingestion may result in abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shock, hypertension, slow pulse, cyanosis, coma and convulsions.
  • Inhalation: (Acute) Inhalation may cause throat irritation and coughing. (Chronic) No effects reported in humans.

4. First Aid Measures

  • Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air
  • Ingestion: Give victim water or milk to drink to dilute the product. Get medical advice..
  • Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing and footwear. Wash skin with soap and water. Wash clothing before reuse.
  • Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention.
  • Note to Physician: If patient's immune system is compromised, request antibiotic sensitivity chart from Alken-Murray Corporation by e-mail: clearflo@shentel.net

6. Accidental Release Measures

Soil spill: Dig a pit, pond, or lagoon holding area to contain liquid or solid material. Cover solids with a plastic sheet to prevent dissolving in rain or firefighting water. Water spill: Add suitable agent to neutralize spilled material to pH 7 then place into a chemical waste container. Wear approved respirator for nuisance dust during cleanup.

13. Disposal Considerations

RCRA Hazard Class (if discarded): Neat, unused product is not considered a hazardous waste, according to RCRA regulations 40 CFR 261. For proper disposal of used materials, an assessment must be completed to determine the proper waste management options permissible under applicable rules, regulations and/or laws governing client's location. Wash containers down with water and disinfect with a 1% sodium hypochlorite solution, triple rinse and dispose of rinse water to sewer. Then remove or deface product label to avoid confusion if pail or drum is later refilled. Clean, empty containers should be recycled or disposed of through an approved waste management facility.
