Emergency Overview: The microorganisms used in this product are BioSafety Class 1 microorganisms, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control as unlikely to cause disease in healthy humans or animals. However, persons with compromised immune systems should avoid contact with open wounds and/or breathing dust or mist from manufacturing processes. These organisms are susceptible to many commonly used antibiotics, and Alken-Murray is willing to supply antibiotic sensitivity information to any doctor or import health authority requesting it. Because surfactants are included, primary skin irritation under 29CFR 1910.1200 is considered possible, as is true of many shampoos that contain the same surfactants. Although bacterial cultures included in this product were grown in a sterile aqueous medium containing a variety of nutrients, including corn syrup solids, digests of soybean and/or skim milk, glucose or other sugars, vegetable oils, including olive oil, yeast extract, mineral salts, etc., the concentrations of these residual nutrients are believed to be below levels capable of triggering irritation.

Bacteria in this product: Oral toxicity: Rats: LD50 = > 5 grams/kg. Acute Inhalation: 10 rats survived for the entire 10 day test with exposure level of 9.2 mg/L. Product with spores at 0.1% concentration in a 50% ethanol solution was considered a sensitizer in albino guinea pigs.

Environmental Fate: This product is not likely to bio-concentrate, if mixed with water. This product released directly or indirectly into the environment is not expected to have a significant impact.

Environmental Toxicity: This material has a low potential to affect aquatic organisms, secondary waste treatment microorganisms, and the growth of some plants.
Ammonia: Fish toxicity - 1600 µg/L 96 hour LC50 (mortality) common jollytail,
Coconut based surfactants including CAS# 6178-40-0, 68140-00-1 and 9004-80-4 present low volatility and an aquatic LC50 of 0.2 to 59 mg, and since the included bacteria use them as a food source, minimal environmental impact is expected.

Aquatic Ecotoxicity of Individual Ingredients: CAS# 2634-33-1, 1,2 benzisothiazolin-3-one (<1%) is VERY toxic to aquatic organisms (Fish, LC50, 4 days exposure = 1.0 - 3.3 ppm. Crustaceans (Daphnia magna) EC50 immobilization = 2 days exposure 0.85 ppm.

Biodegradability: According to surfactant manufacturer, Stepan, the Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonic Acid CAS# 27175-87-0, using the OECD Closed Bottle Biodegradability Test, achieved 100% primary degradation in 3 days, involving oxidation of the carbon atoms at the alkyl side chain to form transient, low toxicity sulfophenyl carboxylate intermediates. Complete breakdown, characterized by cleavage of the aromatic ring and total mineralization to carbon dioxide, water and inorganic sulfonates. CAS# 2634-33-1 will biodegrade by 81.9% within 20 days.

If there is any specific concern about discharge of this product to the environment, the selected and adapted cultures in Alken Clear-Flo® 7004 will digest LAS and many other varieties of chemical surfactants more rapidly than unadapted cultures.
