Hydrogen Sulfide Treatise

HYDROGEN SULFIDE ODOR CONTROL &
GENERAL INDUSTRIAL WASTE TREATMENT

DESCRIPTION:

ALKEN ENZ-ODOR® 8 is a concentrated, dry blend of selected, non-pathogenic, Biosafety Class 1 bacteria (3 strains of Bacillus and 13 gram-negative, vegetative strains,, including Starkeya novella), having the exceptional capability to remove foul-smelling hydrogen sulfide and degrade organic sulfur compounds (sulfur amino acids, mercaptans etc.) without generating this undesirable, toxic gas. Instead, elemental sulfur and sulfides are simply converted to odorless sulfates. Also degrades petroleum hydrocarbons and other industrial wastes. Improved formula since 01-24-2003. Accordingly, ALKEN ENZ-ODOR® 8 is advised for use in tanneries, sulfite process paper mills, breweries, refineries, rubber vulcanizing plants and other industrial treatment facilities where odor problems are prevalent and high COD and TPH need to be degraded too.

CHARACTERISTICS:

Bacteria Count  5 Billion Colony Forming Units/gram
 Appearance  Free flowing brown powder
 Odor  Yeast Like

ADVANTAGES:

  • Achieves effective odor control, especially from hydrogen sulfide and fatty acids
  • Improved fatty acid degrading and sulfide oxidation
  • Prevents sulfuric acid corrosion
  • Especially effective odor control in refineries, degrades petroleum and phenol.
  • Degrades a wide variety of difficult compounds which are toxic to naturally occurring bacteria.
  • Some cultures will grow in both aerobic and anaerobic environments
  • Aerobic conditions are required for petroleum digestion, H2S and mercaptan oxidation
  • For sulfide oxidation, Starkeya novella has an absolute requirement for 100 to 150 mg biotin per one MGD to be treated. This can sometimes be found in food wastes.
  • Effective over a wide temperature range (42 degrees F to 100 degrees F).
  • Effective over a wide pH range (5.0 to 8.5).
  • Non-toxic, non-corrosive, completely safe to handle and store.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:

See

 Industrial/Municipal dosage charts
for general application rates. Your Alken-Murray Corporation authorized distributor will prescribe both the initial application and the maintenance doses taking into consideration such factors as the total daily influent and effluent, BOD/COD loadings, suspended solids and levels of pesticides or other contaminants. Be aware that a heavy rainfall may bring significant contamination with its runoff, and a one-time dosage equal to the initial application may be needed to restore control. Mechanical aeration may be needed where natural aeration is deficient. For optimum bacterial performance, hydrate ALKEN ENZ-ODOR® 8 before application. Thoroughly mix each pound of dry product with two gallons of warm (approx.70 F) water from the wastewater to be treated. Add 1 lb. ALKEN® BIO-NUTRIENT 3 (a readily metabolizable source of carbon plus nitrogen and phosphate), if prescribed. Add a pH adjuster, as necessary. Allow the mixture to hydrate for two hours, stirring vigorously every ½ hour. After final settling, carefully pour off the top liquid layer for use, squeeze all liquid from the bran that has settled into the liquid and dispose of the remaining bran. When using this product to attack hydrogen sulfide odors, be sure to ADD enough sodium nitrate to bring the system total to 10 to 100 ppm sodium nitrate, unless adequate nitrate is already present in waste stream. Apply manually or by means of a chemical metering pump. Avoid use of algaecides, herbicides, and antibiotics when using ALKEN ENZ-ODOR® 8.

Learn more about Starkeya novella from the ALKEN ENZ-ODOR® 14 product technical bulletin, in which it performs solo. Caution: In the presence of ferric phosphate and reduced sulfur compounds, creates ferrous iron and solubilizes phosphate. To avoid this issue, substitute ALKEN CLEAR-FLO® 7008 and ALKEN ENZ-ODOR® 12

Since there is no Canadian DSL compliant version of this product, Canadians can substitute ALKEN CLEAR-FLO® 7008C and ALKEN ENZ-ODOR® 12
