Material Safety Data Sheet

SPECIALTY BLEND - DEGRADES ETHYLENE GLYCOL, ETC

DESCRIPTION:

ALKEN CLEAR-FLO® 7030 is a concentrated dry blend of selected bacteria having the exceptional capability to degrade ethylene glycol and closely related linear alcohols. This product combines a wide array of petroleum degrading strains with 3 strains of surfactant/detergent degraders, creating a product with superior bio-kinetic response, when compared with naturally occurring bacterial populations and competitive formulas. This formula was designed to handle ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and similar linear alcohols (such as hexanol and isopropanol). ALKEN CLEAR-FLO® 7030 is especially suited to treat the runoff from airplane deicers employed at airports, lowering discharge concentrations to meet typical 100 ppm NPDES discharge limits. The combined cost of treatment tank rental, aerator purchase, the service fees of an Alken® distributor and cost of product (ALKEN CLEAR-FLO® 7030 + ALKEN® BIO-NUTRIENT™3) can save up to 42% of the costs of hiring a disposal company to haul ethylene glycol wastewater offsite to an approved disposal facility.

CHARACTERISTICS:

 Bacteria count:  5 billion CFU/gm.
 Appearance:  Free-flowing, brown powder
 Odor:  Yeast-like

FEATURES AND BENEFITS:

  • Degrades ethylene glycol and similar difficult compounds.
  • Degrades an average of 20 mg/L/day of ethylene glycol, over 27 days., with concentrations up to 8%, at 50 degrees F (10 degrees C).
  • The hghest degradation rate observed occurred on days 5 and 6, at 175 mg/L/day, after which the rate of degradation drops off significantly.
  • For each 18 degrees F (10 degrees C) temperature increase above 50 degrees F (10 degrees C), the average rate of glycol degradation will double, up to 104 degrees F(40 degrees C). If temperature is increased above 104 degrees F (40 degrees C), the rate of degradation will decrease. See chart below for specifics.
  • Effective over a wide pH range (5.9 to 9.0).
  • SAVE several hundred thousand dollars a year compared with the cost of hauling to an approved disposal facility
  • Non-toxic, non-corrosive, safe to handle and store when used as directed. b

APPLICATION:

See

 Industrial/Municipal dosage charts
for application rates. If submitted diagnostic form data indicates that chemical adjustment of pH, alkalinity or other parameters are needed or that customized deviation from the standard industrial/municipal wastewater dosage charts, your authorized Alken-Murray distributor (or Alken-Murray Microbiology Department) will provide this information prior to accepting your order for any Alken-Murray Corporation products.

Mechanical aeration is necessary for ethylene glycol remediation. Avoid use of algaecides, herbicides, and antibiotics when using ALKEN CLEAR-FLO®. To ensure optimum bacterial performance, hydrate each pound of ALKEN CLEAR-FLO® 7030 with one pound of ALKEN® BIO-NUTRIENT™ 3, prior to application. Thoroughly mix the two dry products with two gallons of warm (approx.70 F) ethylene glycol contaminated wastewater. Allow the mixture to hydrate for five hours, stirring vigorously every hour, then slowly (over a period of two hours) lower the temperature of the treatment until it matches the temperature of the treatment tank (at least 50 F) and either pour the entire mixture into the tank or decant. If decanting is selected: carefully pour the top liquid layer into the treatment tank, squeeze all liquid from the bran that has settled (through cheesecloth or an old Tee-shirt with arm and neckholes tied off with twine) into the treatment tank and dispose of the remaining bran.

For optimum bacterial performance, hydrate ALKEN CLEAR-FLO® 7030 before application. Thoroughly mix each pound of dry product with two gallons of warm at approximately 20 degrees C (approx.70 degrees F) water without chlorine. Allow the mixture to hydrate for two hours, stirring vigorously at least once every 30 minutes, but even better results can be obtained when product is stirred continuously for two hours, during hydration, using an overhead stirre

PACKAGING and HANDLING:

ALKEN CLEAR-FLO® 7030 is packaged in 25 and 50 lb fiber drums. One ounce samples are available for laboratory testing. Store in a cool dry place. Avoid excessive inhalation and wash hands with, warm soapy water after handling.
