DEMULSIFIER FOR SEPARATION OF WATER FROM
RECLAIMED OIL, REFINERY CRUDES, AND SLOPS

DESCRIPTION:

ALKEN® 860 is a linear, non-ionic surfactant blend designed to break the most difficult water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsions. Reclaimed oil, refinery crudes, and slops often contain emulsions which have been stabilized by inorganic impurities, viscosity stabilizers, etc. Oil recovered from tank cleaning operations often contains emulsifiers that can make conventional separation processes completely ineffective. Alken® 860 destabilizes the oil-water interface that surrounds each water particle in the emulsion, replaces the emulsifier molecules (if any), and allows the water to coalesce. The process is heat catalyzed at 150 degrees F (66 degrees C). Using this moderate heat speeds the destabilization and, reduces the viscosity of the oil, promoting the rapid separation of the water by gravity or centrifugation. See Oily Waste Control manual for more information and case studies.

Dewatering and/or desalting of crude refinery feedstocks normally requires only the lowest of dosages. At these low treat rates, ALKEN® 860 will have no detectable effect on finished products.

DOSAGE AND FEEDING:

Because of the diverse nature of oil and waste amenable to treatment with ALKEN® 860, specific recommendations have to be made on a case-by-case basis. The dosage of ALKEN® 860 prescribed to break a particular emulsion varies from as little as 1 gallon per 40,000 gallons of oil (25 ppm) to as much as 1 gallon per 1000 gallons of oil (1,000 ppm), but a temperature of 150 degrees F (65.5 degrees C) Finding the most cost-effective dosage, as well as determining the best conditions of temperature, slow mixing, settling time, etc., is best done in the laboratory, using a sample of the actual oil or waste and a sample of Alken® 860. Request your copy of the testing procedure.

After treatment with Alken® 860 to separate oil, the residual water should be treated with Alken Clear-Flo® 7008 or 7036, supplemented by Alken® Bio-Nutrient 3, to remediate the small amount of residual water soluble hydrocarbons, so that the waste water can legally and safely be discharged to the local wastewater collection system or can be used for agricultural irrigation. PACKAGING AND HANDLING:

ALKEN® 860 is packaged in 5 gal., 15 gal., 30 gal. and 55 gal. steel drums. It contains a high-flash-point aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, and should be handled with careful attention to the recommendations in the Material Safety Data Sheet.
