12. Ecological Information

  • Environmental Fate: Product is unlikely to bio-concentrate in aquatic organisms and fish. Has low mobility in soil and may rapidly volatilize in the atmosphere.

  • Environmental Toxicity: Surfactants are harmful to aquatic life in low concentrations. Undiluted Alken Citrus Degreaser 872 surfactants CAN cause suffocation of fish by blocking their ability to assimilate oxygen via their gills. If environmental release cannot be prevented, dilute product as much as possible. Also watch dissolved oxygen levels and boost as much as possible, since Diethanolamine IS an oxygen scavenger, making it even harder for fish to access oxygen in the immediate surrounding water of a concentrated spill. Sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate, CAS# 577-11-7: Bluegill LC50: 96 hr.= 37 mg/L; Trout LC50 96 hr.= 28 mg/L; Daphnia LC50 48 hr.= 36 mg/L./ Isopropyl alcohol / CAS# 67-63-0: 24 hr. LC50 aquatic effects: Fathead minnow (Pimephales Promelas): LC50 =1000 mg/L/96 Hr. Golden orfe: LC50 = 8970 mg/L/48 Hr. goldfish: LC50 = GT5000 mg/L/24 Hr.

  • Biodegradability: Laboratory studies indicate limited biodegradation with "non-acclimated sludge", based on component data. All ingredients are easily biodegraded by Alken-Clear-Flo® 7008. There is no food chain concentration potential for any ingredients. Alken Clear-Flo® 7002 is normally selected by Dr. Ali of Solutions Chemical Consultants, as a secondary cleanup step, following positive results from application of this product, under the name Solutions Special X3™, continuing digestion of phenolics, PAH's, along with any unreacted d-Limonene from the original formula. Watch dissolved oxygen levels, since Diethanolamine IS an oxygen scavenger/antioxidant.

13. Disposal Considerations

RCRA Hazard Class (if discarded): Neat, unused product is not considered a hazardous waste, according to RCRA regulations 40 CFR 261. . For proper disposal of used materials, an assessment must be completed to determine the proper waste management options permissible under applicable rules, regulations and/or laws governing client's location. Use until less than 1 inch remains in the container, triple rinse with clean water, and pour rinse water to sewer. Then remove or deface product label to avoid confusion if pail or drum is later refilled. Clean, empty containers should be recycled or disposed of through an approved waste management facility.

14. Transportation Information

Alken Citrus Degreaser 872 qualifies for UNREGULATED SHIPMENT via DOT or TDG, since its 35% d-Limonene in fully emulsified into a > 40% water-base by a blend of proprietary surfactants that together comprise 15 to 18% of the finished formula. The proper shipping name for UNREGULATED SHIPMENT via DOT and TDG is as follows: "Class 55 (Item 048580, sub 3): "Cleaning or washing compound N.O.I., liquid, in drums or pails".

Unfortunately, no UN numbers ARE offered to classify a "water-miscible Terpene hydrocarbon", like Alken Citrus Degreaser 872 so the Alken-Murray CEO selected the "Terpene hydrocarbon" UN number, and modified the hazard class from "FLAMMABLE, Class II" , which matches d-Limonene itself, to "Combustible, Class IIIA", to comply with the ACTUAL FLASH POINT of 160 F (71.1 C) of THIS water-based emulsion product.

  • DOT Proper Shipping Name: Combustible liquid, N.O.S. (Contains Emulsified Water-Based d-Limonene Hydrocarbon Cleaner)
  • DOT Hazard Class: IIIA Combustible liquid
  • UN /NA Number: 2319
  • Packing Group: III
  • DOT Label:Combustible liquid, N.O.S. (Contains Emulsified Water-Based d-Limonene Hydrocarbon Cleaner), 3A, UN 2319, PG III
