Material Safety Data Sheet

COOLING TOWER MUD, SILT, AND OIL CLEANER

DESCRIPTION:

ALKEN® CW 883 is  a free-flowing powdered blend of alkaline cleaners, emulsifiers, wetting agents, and detergents formulated to clean accumulated mud, silt, cutting oils, grease, dirt and other contaminants that are left after manufacture and installation, from all types of heat exchange equipment, including cooling towers and open and closed recirculating water systems.Alkaline silicates passivate metal surfaces, protecting them from corrosion until regular chemical treatment is started. ALKEN® CW-883 was originally named "ALKEN® COIL WASH", for its primary application, cleaning the heat-exchange surfaces of recently installed cooling towers.

ALKEN® CW-883 functions at normal water temperatures; heating of the cleaning solution is NOT necessary when cleaning a cooling tower. ALKEN® CW-883 causes a radical pH change in the system; which, together with the surfactant action, loosens deposits of accumulated mud, slime, algae, and oils that can bake onto heat-exchange surfaces, increasing maintenance burden, reducing heat transfer, and decreasing efficiency.

Cleaning of new systems with ALKEN® CW-883 prior to start-up is essential to insure proper operation. ALKEN® CW-883 is also recommended for periodic maintenance for any system fouled by oil, grease, mud, silt, cutting oils, or other organics, to thoroughly purge systems which have been shut down either on a seasonal basis, or because accumulation forced the system out of service.

BENEFITS:

  • Disperses or dissolves oil, grease, organics.
  • Prevents carbonizing of oil and grease on tube surfaces.
  • Inhibits formation of sticky, adherent residues in combination with treatment
  • Effective cleaner - completely soluble, non-corrosive, inhibited.
  • One-step operation.- Easy to Use
  • Less Toxic than competing products

DOSAGE DIRECTIONS:

In normal use, ALKEN® CW-883 is dissolved in the pan of the cooling tower at a rate of 10 to 50 pounds per thousand gallons of water in the system, depending on conditions. If the water capacity is not known, dosage can be estimated on a basis of 1 to 5 ounces per rating-ton of the cooling tower. For closed systems, use 10 to 50 pounds per thousand gallons of water in the system, and feed as a slurry through a shot feeder.

CLEANING:

In most cases, the system must be taken out of operation before cleaning with ALKEN® CW-883. Add the required amount of material to the pan or sump of a cooling tower system, or add as a slurry through the shot feeder of a closed system. Circulate the cleaning solution for 8 to 12 hours. After cleaning, the system should be drained and flushed with fresh water. Finally, refill the system, add the required start-up dosage of regular treatment, and return to operation.

PACKAGING:

ALKEN® CW-883 is shipped in containers conforming to Performance Oriented Packaging Specifications in following sizes: 50 lbs.,(5 gallon) polyethylene pails, 100 lbs.(15 gallon) fiber druma nd 300 lbs. (35 gallon) fiber drums Store in dry place. Keep container closed. Contains mild alkali - avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing
