After a liquid product is cultured, excess liquid volume and nutrients are often removed by recirculating the product through the ULTRA-FILTRATION SYSTEM shown to the right. Bacteria are retained in the circulation loop, while excess nutrients and water go through the cylindrical filter and can be drained off. The volume can be decreased to as little as one tenth of the original volume.

After a product is finished and leaves this system, a chemical cycle involving a hydroxide soak, is used to clean the system, followed by treatment with hypochlorite and subsequent pH reduction to 2.5.

To prepare the filter for reuse, the acid is neutralized and the system is flushed with distilled water.
