Fall 2001 Product Improvements CF 7007 & 7008 were majorly reformulated for greatly improved and broader spectrum performance. So far, all clients who tried the new blends were pleased with them. |
New Floor Cleaning Liquid Alken Clear-Flo 5200, new improved formula of no-rinse, no-slip, grease-degrading floor cleaner. Contains special new fatty acid degrading microbes. We will be offering both regular strength product at 54 million CFU/ml, and a 5x manufacturing concentrate (270 million CFU/ml) with blending directions. Ask for your sample today. |
All-in-One Petroleum Remediation
Liquid - Straight out of R & D Be among the first to test our improved Alken Clear-Flo 5100, with new gram-positive spore-forming Bacillus strains with proven ability to degrade crude oil, diesel and gasoline. The new formula has a concentration of 54 million CFU/ml, which is 27 times the microbial concentration of our old formula, and includes our Alken Surface Cleaner 874 for effective breaking of the oil-water interface and Alken 896 oxygenated nitrate catalyst with nutrients and micronutrients to balance the carbon in petroleum spills. Ask for your FREE sample of the "CF 5100" today. All clients have tested this new formula have been thrilled with its performance, so we are sticking with this formulation. |
Alken Enz-Odor 5
- Improved with Double the Count and Half the Dosage. In keeping with our policy of providing high count, low dose products, we have reformulated Alken Enz-Odor 5 so that clients only need to use half as much product as before. Other minor revisions in the product also improve its performance. |
Other Current Product Improvements CF 4003, 4004, 4103, 4104 and Alken Enz-Odor 2 have been improved with the addition of a new grease degrading Bacillus that gives more complete breakdown of grease, even in the presence of nitrate. |
Another Application for CF 1006 Degrade the hydrocarbon slicks caused by Botryococcus braunii algae with CF 1006. This formula is also the product of choice when storm water runoff brings potential petroleum oils, gasoline etc. into your pond or lake. |
CF 7112 Deleted Since we now offer a 50x strength of CF 7110, it is less expensive and less hassle for a client starting a new aerobic waste treatment plant to use a combination of CF 7110-50x with either CF 7001 or 7007, instead of using the old CF 7112, so we have deleted this product from our line. |
Approved Additives for Use with
Alken-Murray Liquid Microbial Concentrates Anionic and cationic surfactants often destabilize bacterial mixtures, so we recommend against using them. Stability of the formulas with the following surfactants was tested up to 3% of the total formulation. Tomadyne 101 LF was tested up to 5% and Tween 80 was tested up to 10%. WAQ-LC was tested to 26% and showed a ver slow die-off. Triton X and Stepan Makon OP-9 LIQUID surfactants interfere with our preservative system, so they are NOT recommended.
Fragrances Approved for use with Alken-Murray Microbial Concentrates
Dyes Approved for use with Alken-Murray Microbial Concentrates
Thickener Approved for use with Alken-Murray Microbial Concentrates

Revised WWT and soil bench test
procedures We have revised these procedure in response to feedback from clients and distributors, to make it easier to use, easier to know what kind of equipment to purchase if you do not already have a lab. We have listed equipment we work with so that we can help you with problems if you encounter any. Other equipment may be equally good, so use these suggestions as a guide, not a requirement. |
Revision Assistance Requested for
QC procedures Since some of our clients and distributors use our QC (quality control) test procedures to monitor product viability and freedom from pathogens, please let us know if you have a problem understanding anything written in the procedures. If your question appears to be one that others would find confusing, we will revise the procedure. |
Question from Research and Development We are working on a salt-tolerant (7.5 to 10% NaCl) microbial formula (five strains of Bacillus) and need to know the level of interest and what talents such are desired in such a formula. Our current research blend of facultative anaerobe and aerobic Bacillus strains is especially good for degrading fats and greases and cellulose. We have considered pickling factory wastewater, but is there any other high salt wastewater that could not be treated until now? For those who are not aware, sea water averages 3% and most of our strains will work quite well in that environment, so this formula would be for even saltier applications. |
Case Studies Wanted In exchange for the first two case studies on the products listed below, we offer a 10% discount on your next order of the case study product. Case studies must include "before" and "after" test results and clear comparative pictures, if applicable. If your client does not give permission for their name to be used, we can disguise it. Especially wanted: CF 1005 CF 4003 (since improved formula 3/15/02) CF 4004 (since improved formula 3/15/02) CF 4005 CF 7007 (since new formula 10/2001) CF 7008 (since new formula 10/2001) Enz-Odor 2 (since improved formulation 3/15/02) Enz-Odor 9 Enz-Odor 12 Treat-A-Loo 2 |

Hawaii Has New List of Nonrestricted
Microorganisms Effective 12/01/01, Hawaii has a new list of nonrestricted microorganisms which will allow Alken-Murray to ship our BEST formulations without special substitutions or using older names for strains to pass approval of the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. Highlighting the changes of most significance - Nitrosomonas has been added and all Bacilli we use are accepted. The Pseudomonas strains we use are also all on the list. |
Hach Offers New TOC Test Kit Hach website offers a new procedure for measuring TOC (total organic carbon) rapidly and inexpensively (compared to purchasing a super expensive TOC Analyzer). Alken-Murray sometimes asks for this data to determine the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus that should be added to a system for proper microbial activity to occur. If you already have the COD reactor, lab shield and DR-890 hand-held spectrophotometer, then this is a relatively inexpensive test to add to your arsenal of testing ability. The additional equipment and supplies needed are probably already in your lab; magnetic stirrer, Erlenmeyer flasks, stirbar, pipettors (Eppendorf or Tensette), test tube rack and certain common chemical solutions and organic-free water (see Hach website). Why would you want to measure TOC? When determining how much nutrients to add to a system, the ratio of organic carbon (TOC) to total nitrogen (or ammonia) to phosphorus is needed. |
Hach also has a TPH test kit (extremely
low levels) for wastewater Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons are tested for purposes of degrading petroleum hydrocarbons, where this is suspected or known in wastewater or soil. CHEMetrics offers a portable soil test kit, but Hach offers kits for both wastewater and soil. Higher levels of TPH will still require testing with IR Spectroscopy or Gas Chromatograph. |
Hardy Diagnostics Offers New Chromogenic
Media Reveal Salmonella-Shigella with Hardy's ChromAgar S. aureus, catalog G139, faster and easier than using our QC-3 procedure. They also offer fast tests for E. coli, Listeria and Candida. http://www.hardydiagnostics.com/02enviro.chromagar.html |
Beware of Anthrax Scams There are companies which seek to capitalize on the hysteria over Anthrax as a biological weapon by offering filtration systems and various "cures" for Anthrax that have NOT been tested with actual Bacillus anthracis, relying instead on filtering or killing its non-lethal cousin, Bacillus thuringiensis. The USFDA is overwhelmed trying to catch and stop all of this fraud. All we can do, is extend the warning. If you are considering purchasing a device, filter or "cure" for Anthrax, seek copies of documentation that actual disease-causing Bacillus anthracis was tested! |
Improved Quality Control Specifications We have been working closely with raw material suppliers and factory staff to set up strict parameters for raw materials and finished products to assure increased production uniformity and quality for our fuel treatments. A new spectrophotometer will be used by the factory so that colorimetric specifications can be added for raw materials and finished products, in addition to testing for specific gravity, oxidation and lack of turbidity. |
